In 1997, the firm was retained by the City of Fort Lauderdale as the Civil Engineer responsible for preparing a Master Plan with a landscape architect for revitalizing a 25 acre entertainment area at the Intracoastal Waterway and Oakland Park Boulevard. As part of this effort, WHK was responsible for all traffic studies, conceptual roadway plan, conceptual parking plan and cost estimates. The initial plan was not feasible with existing out parcels and available revenues.
A major developer was secured and the master plan revised to incorporate a mixed use structure (Bridgeside Place) with a 1,000 space parking garage, 35,000 square feet of office and commercial floor area and a 15 story tower with 250 rental apartments. This complicated program was developed over a five year time frame and involved Sapphire Development, the City of Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding Assessment District. The program included street vacation, deeding of City property, purchase of out parcels, major street and utility relocations, streetscape improvements, construction of a joint use parking garage.
WHK, as the projects civil engineer, prepared all traffic and parking studies, developed a phasing plan for utility and street relocations, prepared the roadway design and grading plan, drainage plan, water and sewer plan, cost estimates, permitting and construction observation. This major project was completed in 2002.
